Controlling Your Outbursts

Hi, I am new to this but I decided to join after I have had a set back in my mental health.
Recently I have been feeling stressed with work as it is bringing me down and not the atmosphere i would like to be in but I am struggling with finding a new job. I find it difficult to shut off, even when i am sleeping i end up dreaming about work and feel like i cannot escape.
This weekend i visited my boyfriend, we were all happy and had a nice day out and suddenly when doing a job application together i ended up snapping at him so no reason. I could have said what i wanted to in a nicer way but I just snapped. This is not like me with him, we have such a healthy happy relationship i don't know where it came from. I apologised for snapping and we started to move on from it but I found it difficult to brush it aside, I was annoyed with myself that this has happened. I ended up having a panic attack to the point i was hitting myself and scratching at my own skin and i felt paralysed and not in my body (i hope that makes sense). Does anyone have any advice on how to control these outbursts i know that stress is my trigger factor but I want to control these outbursts as i do not want it to break down my relationship like it did my last. This outburst lasted for over 12 hours and I was being very irrational.

Hi Lauren,

Welcome to the forum,...

Increased (huge) stress reduces our ability to respond in a measured and controlled way, making it all too easy to respond inappropriately...then after the event we feel ashamed and disgusted at the way we have behaved. Sound familiar ?

This was not your fault
None of us know what it feels like to be you!
All of us have limits and sometimes we react in ways that hurt those around us as well as ourselves.
