I need advice please

Postby claytmum » Wed Jul 31, 2019 11:10 am

Hello,

My husband was seen by the psychiatrist maybe 4? Months ago. He has since got worse, when he went to see the psych they put him on 15mg mertazipine. He’s since gone up to max dose 45mg and then venfalaxin added in and then that increased (all by the GP) who wasn’t actually sure to increase his venfalaxin as he reported last time that he felt they work for 2 weeks or so and then wears off.

The last GP made an ‘urgent referal’ Back to psychiatrist and they have fast tracked (finally after 8 months wait) his CBT which starts in 5 weeks. But the psychiatrist doesn’t want to see him again, they have just said to try the therapy when it starts and he’s on ‘the right meds’

Does anyone think this is ridiculous? I feel he needs to be seen and reassessed, he might have treatment resistant depression or need alternative medicine? We’ve even paid for private therapy for 2 months now I know this is not CBT but it’s not made him any better he keeps getting worse.

Thanks if you read this I needed to rant.

I had a very difficult time getting my treatment right
and its still not ideal, having to patch together my therapy and stuff

the medication was changed about 4 times before they got it right
I dont think I would be here still
if it were not for my advocate, solicitor and step mother fighting for me
so that I could contribute to the discussions about it

and then my brother told me
to get copies of all treatment records ,
write letters about how its going and demand responses

these services are very overloaded
and we have to make some noise to get heard !

let us know how it goes

Thanks for replying.

Oh no it’s such a shame to hear, yes I understand they are over stretched ect but I think if one health professional eg the GP makes an ‘urgent’ referal back to the psychologist then they should at least review him. The one who saw him last time doesn’t even work there now so how do they know he doesn’t need to be seen?

He went for an appointment this morning, pre booked to see how he is getting in with his increased dose of venlafaxin and there is two surgeries for his doctors and he’s always just gone to the main one and apparently this appointment was at the other one. He waited an hour before saying something but it was too late and they said they wouldn’t now fit him in. Absolutely ridiculous. He was able to sign in to, so common sense would have been for one surgery to ring the other one to check if he was there.

I’m considering paying for private now.

n yeah incompetence in the administrative side of things
is something I encounter on a regular basis
I do think the problem originates
in the chronic underfunding
where each professional probably has about double
the amount of caseloads that they could reasonably carry

I'm constantly making complaints about it
and getting my advocate to complain
and even my private therapist
had to complain about my NHS treatment

so yes maybe in order to get effective treatment
some private or external support is necessary

otherwise who knows what they will end up doing with our illnesses

common sense of checking out where his appointment is
forget it !

I have my medication delivered from the mental health clinic
to my GP surgery each month
and I'm having to phone up several times before my appointment
because otherwise they will forget to deliver my anti-psychotic medication !

So my husband has been given this advice what do you think? Sensible or just crazy

The doctor said he needs to give his meds longer to work rather than keep switching them, try for 6 months. The calming/zombie effect he feels for two weeks is just a side effect and not what the actual drug is suppose to do. It is not a miracle cure but will make his life a little bit better than it is now. There is no more help for you we’ve put the structures in place it’s time for you to try and work with it as well?

That was the recent advice from GP yesterday.

Many thanks for your help so far.

n yeah ... I have gone through this
like a dark tunnel ... all seems like such a gamble waiting for stuff to work
I was very very ill ...
I needed an advocate and a solicitor
to help me to voice my concerns,
so that my feelings were taken into account
when making their decisions

otherwise I might not be still here
