how to stop using coping mechanisms

Postby sadboy » Sat Oct 05, 2019 9:30 pm

I use some sort of substance or coping mechanism every night to cope with everything I am dealing with. I feel like I need a room where I can just scream, like I need an outlet. Knowing full well it won't solve anything. As soon as it hits 8pm, my depression exponentially increases and I need to get away some how.

Hey :)

Coping mechanisms can be useful to deal with emotions - it just depends on whether they are beneficial or harmful for you. For example, smoking a cigarette every time you're stressed or sad does further damage to your health, but breathing exercises can help your mental wellbeing. By all means, use coping mechanisms alongside your recovery, but try shifting to more positive and beneficial ones!x

I guess all the coping mechanisms I use are not really helpful for me, I just use them to avoid the things I am dealing with. I am trying to move towards healthier options but en up craving the bad ones.
