Going to hospital for scans/tests

Postby ooby » Wed Sep 04, 2013 4:30 pm

Does anyone else here get anxious about going to hospital for scans/tests.
Due to high prolactin caused by antipsychotic depot injections i have to go for a bone density scan and am feeling very anxious about it. I think it's the thought of being amongst a lot of strangers and the thought of maybe having to put on a gown(though i have heard that you can be scanned fully clothed so long as there are no metal zips etc- jogging bottoms and t shirt?).

I hate doing anything where I feel people will be looking and judging.

You are right you can wear clothes so long as there is no metal, so tracky bums or pj's are fine.
If you have any piercings you'll need to remove them or swap them for plastic retainers.

My anxiety always goes up when going in for things like that. It's very nerve wrecking, but I hope all is well!

Thanks everyone. Someone said to have someone with me but i have nobody close at hand. I might try and see if one of the rehab team can come with me.
My usual fear of doing something to embarrass myself and being told off is to the front. So many situations are potentially threatening to me.

getting someone from the rehab team sounds like a good idea. also, maybe you could focus on after the scan - perhaps promise yourself a treat afterwards or take some chocolate with you to eat when it's finished, hugs xxx

Is it possible for someone to ring the department and explain on your behalf how this will affect you? If the staff in the department know it may make things easier
for you.

I did this when I went to the dentist and they were brilliant with me.
