Care Quality Commission's 'Count Me In' census

Comment from Marjorie Wallace, chief executive of the mental health charity SANE, on the Care Quality Commission's 'Count Me In' census, which has found that people from black and white/black mixed ethnic groups are three times more likely to be admitted to hospital under the Mental Health Act:

"The disproportionately large number of people from black and mixed ethnic groups who continue to be admitted to psychiatric hospital is deeply troubling.

"Care in the community is designed to help prevent people reaching such a crisis that they need inpatient care, yet this policy seems a particular failure when it comes to certain black and ethnic minority groups.

"What is need is increased understanding of the families of those in need, and sensitivity to different cultures and religions, so that fewer people fall through the cracks in the system."
