Comment from Marjorie Wallace, chief executive of the mental health charity SANE, on the government's new initiatives for mental health:
“While it is admirable that there should be these initiatives to improve people’s quality of life, and aspire to mental wellbeing for all, we hope this will not be at the expense of people too ill or disabled by their illness to work. They will already be facing diminishing services through the financial pressure on trusts to close beds and reduce staff.
“What we need is to protect resources for the severely mentally ill and provide more effective safeguards for those who can work and their employers.”
